MADURAI: In Madurai district, the ‘Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammiayar Memorial Marriage Assistance Scheme’ for women is claimed to be a “roaring success.” Under the scheme, a poor bride gets Rs.15,000 on production of necessary documents. According to M. Jeyalakshmi, District Social Welfare Officer, Rs.2.64 crore was distributed to 1,763 beneficiaries in 2006-2007 and Rs 2.29 crore to 1,533 beneficiaries in 2007-2008. Under special category of Schedule Castes and Schedule Tribes, the department distributed Rs.43.5 lakh to 287 and Rs.49.20 lakh to 328 beneficiaries. Women who want to avail themselves of the benefit must have completed 18 years and completed SSLC (pass or fail) and a pass is compulsory if the examinations were written as private candidates. The annual income must not be more than Rs.12,000. The bridegroom should also submit the a copy of the SSLC mark statement, income proof from Tahsildar, marriage invitation, community certificate, ration card and a letter from Village Administrative Officer to ensure that it is the first marriage for the bridegroom.
