The Cauvery junction underpass in Bangalore. Bangalore: Looks like the term Eternal India is taking another meaning what with work on the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike’s much-touted three-day underpass stretching to nearly three weeks. Though the 72-hour deadline was announced on January 16 with much fanfare with the BBMP’s maiden attempt to build an underpass in just 72 hours, its officials are now marching towards achieving a satisfactory record — yes, a record — of completing such a mammoth task in less than a month. The BBMP men – who have overcome many hurdles such as breakage of water pipelines, soil slip, error in measurement while building a retaining wall — during the last 480 hours, are now furiously engaged in completing the Cauvery junction underpass. In the meanwhile, the cost of construction, which was initially estimated at around Rs 1.45 crore, has now gone up by about 20 to 25 per cent. The work should be completed by the weekend if no further hurdles crop up, said BBMP Chief Engineer (Major Roads) K.S. Krishna Reddy. The underpass is being constructed using a new method of installing pre-cast blocks (called magic boxes) instead of building them at construction site as was done in a conventional method.
