DISPLAYING ITS TALENT: The highlight of the Kerala Police Duty Meet was the dog show. THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Visitors to the Special Armed Police grounds on Wednesday morning were treated to a scintillating display of investigative and scientific skills of the Kerala Police. The occasion, which marked the inauguration of the annual Kerala Police Duty Meet, saw participants in the rank of police constable to circle inspector, drawn from various districts across the State, compete at various events. The categories in which the competitions were held included scientific aide to investigation, lifting of finger and footprints, medico-legal and forensic aspects of crime investigation, crime scene photography and videography, computer awareness, anti-sabotage check and dog squad. The highlight of the event was the dog show, with trained canines displaying their skills in tracing suspects and concealed explosives. The canine contestants were graded on the basis of their discipline and acrobatic skills, which involved jumping through a ring of fire unscathed. The modern face of the police was reflected in the space suit-like protective wear and hi-tech equipment of the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad. An exhibition featuring some of the weapons used by the police, including the AK 47, pistols and the commonly used 305 rifle, was another attraction. Two prize-winning teams in each category will be eligible to take part in the national-level competition, to be held in Mumbai in March.
