Family planning operation: what ails Chengam hospital ?

S. Natarajan

CHENGAM: The Government Hospital at Chengam in Tiruvannamalai district has allegedly stopped performing family planning operation for some months.

According to residents, the management was not taking any step to start conducting the operation again. At present, the 25-bed family planning ward is empty and not being maintained properly.

A local political leader had also suggested that the ward be used to attend outpatients as there is a huge flow of patients to the hospital. The Chengam Government Hospital caters for people from Chengam and Pudupalayam blocks. Pudupalayam is bigger than Chengam and the hospital served more than 100 villages.

According to sources, the persons who come for family planning operation are referred to the Tiruvannamalai General Hospital, which is already burdened with large number of patients and lacks a waiting shelter for them. Women could be seen sitting at the entrance of the Family Planning ward, the sources added.

Patients coming to the Chengam hospital alleged that they were forced to go with their attendees to Tiruvannamalai and stay at the hospital for three to four days till they fully recovered. This increased the total expenditure.

Chengam hospital sources said the hospital used to hire doctors from Tiruvannamalai to perform family planning operation. It used to be carried out once a week. If there was a shortage of doctors at Tiruvannamalai, private doctors would be hired.

As there was a delay in paying the doctors for a few months, they did not show much interest in coming to Chengam for the operation. Though the problem has been settled, the doctors had still not started to come to Chengam for performing the operations, the sources said.
