Holistic plans for nomads

In cuddalore district, there are 13 habitations of Narikuravar community spread over in 6 taluks. General living condition of Narikuravar community is very low. Entire gamut of socio – economic conditions of Narikuavar community is at low standard. In all the thirteen habitations, there are 399 families and most of them are living in huts, Some of the habitations exist in poramboke lands which at any time shall be evicted thus they live in uncertain condition. In order to uplift the relatively socially isolated Narikuravar community in all aspects of their socio – economic life, the cuddalore district vazhundhu kattuvom project office has taken special efforts to bring out this wholesome plan. It is his sincere emphatic efforts that this holistic plan has come out to uplift living standards of poor, culturally, socially isolated Narikuravar Community in Cuddalore district.

Narikuravar are nomadic, take their huts & domestic utensils from place to place. They earn their living by begging, singing songs, collecting fire wood, sale of spurious jackal horns known as Narikompu and by hawking needles and glass beads.

Regarding their personal hygiene status they can be graded as very poor obvious from the fact that other community including SC / ST are unwilling to mingle with them & always keep a distance from them.

Aim of this project:

Extremely low level of Literacy, Large dropouts of children from school, Low health condition, Largely under developed economy, No assured sources of income, Weak leaky huts, low personal hygiene status, Extremely low zeal to improve.

Hence we decided to provide all kinds of assistance to the relatively isolated Narikuravar community to improve them overall from existing poor condition. Thus this project “Livelihood Enhancement and wellbeing for Narikuravars” has been evolved. This project contemplates to assist Narikuravar community living in cuddalore district to improve in all aspects of their livelihood development and lift style for their economic growth. Thus the project envisages improving the community in Improved tech no – economic development by forming narikuravar societies / federation.

Eradicating adult illiteracy through continuing education pro gramme. Construction of multipurpose hall which can be used for Anganvadi, social gathering, for education meeting, Narikuravar society, place for providing skill training by social welfare department, DIC & Handicrafts providing alternate livelihood opportunities etc.,
