Indelible imprint on the rural terrain

The National Rural Employment Guarantee Project (NREGP) has left an indelible imprint on the rural terrain of the coastal district

The Centre-sponsored scheme taken up on February 2, 2006, has gone a longway in alleviating poverty. About 4.68 lakhs persons have benefited. In two years 3,500 works including desilting of canals, strengthening of river and Lake Bunds and restoration of defunct water bodies, were completed and the District Administration had extended Rs. 108 crore as wages to the people.

The project also prevented migration of workers into urban areas including Bangalore and Chennai.

931 flood prone habitations were relocated so as to prevent the threat of inundation permanently and 22,000 acres of land are receiving water abundantly and ground water table was recharged effectively in the district.
