This Day That Age
Presiding over the 25th meeting of the Central Advisory Board of Education in New Delhi on February 6, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the Union Minister for Education and Scientific Research, emphasised the place of English in Indian education and said that in our present circumstances “knowledge of English is essential if adequate standards are to be maintained in the universities. Unless students are able to use standard textbooks and books of reference in English, progress in all fields of education is bound to suffer.” This required adequate attention to the study of English even in the secondary stage. He declared that regardless of the date when Hindi may be brought into use as the official language of the Union, every effort must be taken to develop it as rapidly as possible. He expressed the hope that this work would be expeditiously performed and would remove one of the main obstacles to wider use of Indian languages at different stages of education.
