COIMBATORE: Kovai Medical Center and Hospital here has said that steroid-free kidney transplantation cuts out the risk of side-effects. The hospital said in a press release that its Consultant Nephrologist Vivek Pathak performed such procedures that helped reduce complications like post-operative diabetes or swelling of the face because of fat deposit. Normally, steroids were given to patients after the transplantation surgery. Apart from the complications mentioned, steroids also increased the requirement of drugs to keep blood pressure under control. The hospital said Jeremy Chapman, Director of Acute Interventional Medicine, Renal Medicine and Transplantation and Urology at Westmead Hospital at Sydney in Australia, was here to study this procedure.
