Commissioner for Town Panchayat holds review meeting

INSPECTION: Commissioner for Town Panchayat Administration K.Gopal inspecting a vermicompost unit at Veerapandi, near Theni, on Wednesday.

THENI: Compost yards in all town panchayats must become operational from March 1. The town panchayat administration must gear up to complete compost yard work by February end, Commissioner for Town Panchayat Administration K. Gopal has said.

He was addressing a review meeting at the Collectorate here on Wednesday.

A compost yard would help safe disposal of wastes by the town panchayat administration.

Top priority must be given for cleanliness, safe disposal of wastes and beautification of town panchayats including creation of children parks. Quality must be ensured in all works and they must be completed within time.

All houses within town panchayats must have septic tanks. Similarly, town panchayat administration must take efforts to provide quality cleaning machines for septic tanks.

After rehabilitation of rural tanks, officials must monitor recharge of ground water and level of increase in water tables in the surrounding areas. People must be taught ways and methods to raise ground water level, he ordered.

Efforts should be taken even to keep private lands clean. Owners of private lands could be motivated to adopt safe disposal of wastes and keep their lands clean and green. Planting of trees in residential areas could also be encouraged with participation of people, said Mr. Gopal.

“Steps would be taken to make temples in town panchayats best tourists attractions.”

Later, he inspected development works being undertaken at Poodhipuram, Melsokkanathapuram and Veeapandi. The Commissioner also interacted with chairmen of town panchayats and advised them to make every town panchayat a garbage-free zone.
