PUDUCHERRY: Social Welfare Minister M.Kandasamy on Wednesday said that the residents of Narambai and Panithittu in Bahour had been opposing allotment of 100 acres of land along the coastline for the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB). Shortly after holding discussions with Chief Secretary Rakesh Behari, Director-General of Police A.S. Khan and Senior Superintendent of Police (Crime and Intelligence) B. Srikanth at his office, Mr. Kandasamy told reporters here that he had apprised them of the views of the locals who wanted to convert the 100-acre site as a tourist spot in view of its scenic beauty. He had also offered to them that the same extent of land could be allotted at another place in Bahour constituency for putting up a permanent camp for the IRB. As of now, temporary shelters had been put up in the police complex at Gorimedu for the IRB camp, he said, adding that the police wanted to shift it to a permanent place. Though the government had acquired the land in Narambai and Panithittu for the specific purpose of setting up of permanent shelters for the IRB, the locals had made it clear that the site was ideal for getting converted into a tourist spot, he said.
