Government staff plan stir

PUDUCHERRY: The Federation of Pondicherry Government Employees’ Associations on Wednesday announced that its members would stage a dharna from 9 am to 1 pm on February 14 before the Assembly to highlight demands such as “B2 status” for Puducherry, constituting a fresh grievances redressal committee and setting up of a public service commission.

General secretary of the Federation T.R.Seshachalam told reporters that the employees would intensify their agitation if the government did not concede the demands within a fortnight after the dharna.

Granting Rs.1,000 a month as interim relief with retrospective effect from January 1, 2006 till the implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations, regularising all the daily-rated and part-time employees who had completed two years and four years of service respectively, reviewing all the recruitment rules and restructuring the posts for every five years according to the need were among the demands of the federation, he said. He stressed the need for setting up of a separate Puducherry Public Service Commission or the Puducherry chapter of the Union Public Service Commission to recruit locals for Group A and Group B posts.

Implementation of the Right to Information Act in the Union Territory had become a “mockery” as the State Information Commission had not been functioning for the past eight months, he said, adding that the Centre could appoint a fresh commission.
