KOCHI: Representatives of 29 Catholic dioceses in the State, leaders of the Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council (KCBC) Temperance Committee and hundreds of church members participated in a day-long fast at Menaka Junction on Wednesday demanding reduction in access to liquor and a change in the general liquor policy of the government. The fast, held on Ash Wednesday — the first day of the Lenten season, was inaugurated by Vijayapuram bishop and Temperance Committee chairman Sebastian Thekkathussery. Joshua Mar Ignatios, Joseph Karikkassery and Sebastian Edyanthrath, members of the committee, were among those who participated. The KCBC committee also reiterated its demand that total prohibition should be brought about in the State in a phased manner and the government should create awareness about the dangers of the use of liquor. The committee has also demanded stringent action against illicit liquor-making and sales. It has said that no more licences should be issued for opening new liquor outlets or bars.
