Thiruvananthapuram: Large-scale corruption and sales tax evasion were detected during surprise checks conducted jointly by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Sales Tax Department at the border check-posts of the State on Monday and Tuesday. The team detected two cases during its operation at Muthanga in Wayanad district on Monday. Two lorries were bringing chicken to the State without paying tax and a load of five quintals of areca nut was being transported to Karnataka by evading tax. The team collected a fine of Rs.26,000 from them. Falsification of records, absence of adequate papers and tax evasion were detected in the case of goods found in lorries and a parcel van in the vicinity of the Vazhikadavu sales tax check-post. A fine of Rs.49,000 was collected. A joint raid on Tuesday detected 20 loads of sand brought along the Aryankavu sales tax check-post. Even though each load was estimated to cost between Rs.12,000 and Rs.20,000 in the market, its value was shown as Rs.1,000. The team collected a fine of Rs.42,000. The team found that over 200 loads were brought in through the check-post on a daily basis. It described the loss to the State on this count as huge. It also detected five cases of tax evasion in a raid conducted at the Kumili check-post on Tuesday. Rs.41,000 was collected as fine. The raids were conducted under the supervision of Vigilance Inspector-General P. Chandrasekharan.
