10-year RI for ten persons

CHENNAI: Ten persons, including a woman, were sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 10 years each for the unlawful possession of 1 kg heroin.
A Special Court for Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act here also imposed a fine of Rs. 2 lakh each of the accused, on Wednesday.
Police had recovered the heroin from J. Thangavel, R. Sooriyanathan, A. Kannan, V. Sampath, V. Dakshinamoorthy, M. Vivekanandan, S. Rajesh, T. Thirunavukkarasu, T. Premnath and C. Karpagam and recovered three motorcycles and six mobile phones from them in April 2004.
On Wednesday, Special Judge A.J. Muruganantham, found them guilty of the provisions of the NDPS Act and said the prosecution, led by Special Public Prosecutor G. Devarajan, had proved the guilt of the accused beyond reasonable doubt. The first nine accused had purchased the contraband from 10th accused C. Karpagam, the prosecution submitted.
