Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram: The United Democratic Front on Wednesday made it very clear that it proposed to stick to its February 19 12-hour hartal plan focussing on five major issues that directly affected the people. Addressing a press conference here at the end of its special high power committee meeting, UDF convener P.P. Thankachan said that the Opposition coalition had been forced to resort to this extreme step owing to the indifference of the government to these issues that had been raised time and again. These issues continued to be relevant. The hartal would not be forced on the people, but the UDF was sure that the people would support the hartal in a show of resentment against the LDF rule. The hartal would be peaceful and no obstacles would be put for people to observe religious rites, conducting weddings and other social functions. “Several organisations and public opinion were in favour of a hartal,” Mr. Thankachan said.
