THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Ramesh Chennithala ended his 24-hour hunger strike on Wednesday morning by accepting a glass of lemon juice from Congress leader K. Karunakaran. Addressing a large gathering in front of the Secretariat here, Mr. Karunakaran said the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government would not be able to solve the State’s problems, as it was itself facing internal problems. The United Democratic Front (UDF) need not do anything, as the Government would come down because of its own contradictions with Ministers at loggerheads with one another. He blamed the Chief Minister for his inability to control his Cabinet colleagues and alleged that the LDF leaders were busy striking land deals at the cost of the State. Mr. Chennithala come down heavily on the CPI(M), which, he said, was contemptuous about popular agitations once it came to power. The LDF government was hesitant to take the Opposition into confidence in finding solutions to burning issues. It had not come forward to convene an all-party meeting to discuss the issue despite the Opposition’s offer to cooperate. The public distribution system was caught in the crossfire between the Finance and Civil Supplies Minister. He justified the February 19 UDF hartal and flayed the Chief Minister for his insulting remarks against popular agitations.
