War widows to be honoured

APCC to hold function on February 9

HYDERABAD: The ex-servicemen department of the APCC will honour nine war widows and three gallantry award winners at a programme in the city on February 9.

Chairman of the ex-servicemen department, Captain M. Suresh Reddy said that the widows of the brave defence personnel, who sacrificed their lives during Kargil war and other combats in the last one decade, would be felicitated.

Families of three heroes of the Kargil war would grace the occasion. They are -- Sergeant P.V.N.R. Prasad, Lance Naik Gopaiah Chary, Major Padmapani Acharya, M. Srinivasa Reddy and Lance Naik M.Y. Ramchander.

Sergeant Prasad laid down his life when a missile hit the helicopter, in which he was handling a gun. Gopaiah Chary and Ramachander, who fought bravely during the Kargil War died in separate bomb blasts while Major Acharya was killed while fighting the enemy during Operation Vijay.

The meeting will also recall the services of Rifleman T. Srinivasulu, Havaldar G. Venkatram Reddy, Lt. Col Krishna Moorthy and Captain R. V. R. Reddy.

Captain Suresh Reddy said that 87-year-old Havaldar A. Somaiah, who joined the Indian Army in 1942, would be felicitated on the occasion. He received the Ashok Chakra twice besides honoured with the Maha Vir Chakra.

Another senior officer Air-Vice Marshal C.V. Parkar would also be honoured for being awarded Maha Vir Chakra in the Indo-Pak War in 1971 when he shot down a Pakistani Sabre jet and bombed refinery deep inside enemy territory. Parents of Captain K. P. Vinay, who was killed in an action against militants in Baramulla in October 2007, would be honoured.
