THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Passengers travelling without tickets or valid passes on Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses will be fined Rs.500 in addition to their ticket charge from February 26. The KSRTC operates 3,900 schedules daily, carrying an estimated 30 lakh passengers. Ticketless travel costs the corporation Rs. 80 to Rs. 100 crore annually, its managing director T.P. Sen Kumar told The Hindu. Ticket inspectors, assisted by special squads, will conduct surprise checks on KSRTC buses. Passengers who refuse to pay the fine will be produced at the nearest police station. The KSRTC’s vigilance officer will represent the corporation’s side in such cases, he said. Travellers who carry luggage in bulk quantities without paying extra baggage will also be fined. Inspectors will be trained to carry out checks on KSRTC buses without disrupting travel. Tamper-proof and user-friendly electronic ticketing machines will be issued to all bus conductors this year to make issuing of tickets and inspections easier. Inspectors travelling in plainclothes will check whether buses are running on time and conductors are issuing tickets to all passengers.
