Taking a stand: The BJP executive meet chaired by Bandaru Dattatreya ( fifth from left) and senior party leaders in Hyderabad on Wednesday.

HYDERABAD: State BJP has criticised the Congress leadership at the Centre for giving greater importance to Chief Minister Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy’s views on statehood to Telangana, rather than the opinion of the party workers and people.

Party president Bandaru Dattatreya told a press conference here on Wednesday that it was ‘strange’ that only Dr. Reddy’s views were elicited, while a group of Congress leaders from Telangana failed to get even an appointment with AICC president Sonia Gandhi. He claimed that Dr. Reddy created an impression with the leadership that the party would not gain by bifurcating the State.

The BJP leader stated that the party would intensify its campaign and pressurise the UPA government for formation of Telangana before the 2009 Assembly elections. He said the party felt that mid-term elections to the Lok Sabha would be held and therefore decided to organise conventions initially in about a dozen constituencies before the end of April.

Later, they would extend to each Assembly segment of the identified constituencies. Farmer’s issues, including waiver of loans up to Rs.50,000 would be highlighted at the conventions. The State Executive and Council meetings are scheduled to be held on February 19 and 20.
