No foul play: Bank Deputy Manager V. Srikanth

Congress leader B. Srikanth owns bank building

HYDERABAD: A Youth Congress leader’s pistol went off accidentally, critically injuring a bank employee at Barkatpura on Wednesday.

The bullet pierced the abdomen of V. Srikanth (32), Deputy Manager of HDFC’s Barkatpura branch, before getting embedded inside.

He was rushed to a corporate hospital. Doctors were operating on him to remove the bullet.

His condition was stated to be critical.

Congress leader B. Srikanth, who owned the bank building, got the weapon licence six months ago and bought a .32 calibre pistol.

He had gone to the bank to check up the ongoing renovation work and was speaking to the deputy manager when the pistol went off.

“As I kept my pistol on the table, the manager took it and was examining it when it went off,” he told reporters. However, the police maintained that the weapon went off in his hands while he was showing it to the manager.

“But the manager made it clear that there was no foul play and it was purely an accident,” the police said.

Interestingly, the manager realised about the bullet wound only after he went into the bathroom minutes later and felt the pain.

By then, the weapon owner too realised that a shot had been fired and rushed the bank manager to a nearby hospital before surrendering himself before the police.

Three in the pouch

The police are trying to ascertain whether the shot was fired when he held the weapon. The pistol was loaded with only one bullet and three more were left in the weapon pouch. City Police Commissioner B. Prasada Rao questioned B. Srikanth at Narayanaguda police station.

A case under the Arms Act was registered against Srikanth.
