Corrections and clarifications

* * The second and seventh paragraphs of a report “Attack on social auditors: Rajasthan police register cases” (February 5, 2008) were: “Those assaulted in Banskhedi, Guradi and Banskheda villages included noted economist and member of the NREG Council, Jean Dreze. They were abused, hit by lathis and stones and dragged through the roads” and “The team, led by Mr. Dreze, was surrounded by nearly 60 people and threatened with dire consequences before the physical assault.”

The fifth paragraph of another report “Social auditors have their way” (Internet edition, February 6, 2008) said: “Police have since registered six cases in connection with the assault on activists in Banskhedi, Guradi and Banskheda villages. Those attacked included noted economist Jean Dreze, who came to Manohar Thana to take part in the dharna staged since January 29 demanding photocopies of works carried out under the scheme.”

Mr. Jean Dreze clarifies that he was “miles from the scene at the time of these attacks”, which did take place.

* * In a report “India, Malaysia firm up army-related dialogue” (February 6, 2008), the Chief of Army staff was incorrectly referred to (twice) as Lieutenant General [Deepak] Kapoor. It should have been Gen. Kapoor. General Deepak Kapoor, PVSM, AVSM, SM, VSM, took over the reins of the Indian Army, as the 23rd Chief of Army Staff, on September 30, 2007. (A similar correction was issued on October 10, 2007. The same error appeared in a report “Troops cut not possible: Kapoor” — October 7, 2007.)

* * In a report “Unity among Tamil Nadu Muslims lauded” (Tamil Nadu, February 6, 2008), the name of Karim Najafi, cultural counsellor, Embassy of Iran, New Delhi, was misspelt as Karim Najasi in the text and caption of the accompanying photograph.

* * The heading of a report “Moscow ban on plant imports upsets New Delhi” (February 5, 2008) should have been “Moscow ban on plant produce upsets New Delhi”, as the text said.

* * A sentence in the fourth paragraph of an article “Overcoming the stigma of leprosy” (Editorial page, January 30, 2008) was: “We are much more likely to catch a cold and cough than we are to contract leprosy, because the Laprae bacteria incubate very slowly.” It should have been “Leprae”. The World Health Organisation clarifies that leprosy is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae, an acid-fast, rod-shaped bacillus. (When M. leprae was discovered by G.A. Hansen in 1873, it was the first bacterium to be identified as causing disease in man.)

* * The heading of a cricket report was “South vs. North match intriguingly poised” (“Sport”, February 6, 2008). A number of readers point out that it should have been “South vs. East match intriguingly poised”, as given in the text and scorecard. It was an editing error.

* * In a cricket report “De Villiers stars for S. Africa” (“Sport”, February 3, 2008), the scoreboard was “South Africa: G. Smith c Chanderpaul b Sammy 50, H. Gibbs b Bravo 39, J. Kallis c Sammy b Edwards 1, A. de Villiers c Bravo b Powell 77”, while it was “West Indies bowling: Taylor 9-0-48-0, Powell 10-1-49-1, Sammy 10-0-58-1, Edwards 5-0-39-0, Bravo 8.5-0-31-2, Lewis 5-0-35-0.” The bowling figures were incorrect and should have been “Edwards 5-0-39-1”.
