ISLAMABAD: Major-General Javed Sultan, who was leading the Army operations in South Waziristan, was killed in a helicopter crash in the tribal region that also killed seven other officers. A military spokesman said the U.S.-made Bell 412 helicopter crashed due to a technical fault, ruling out sabotage or the possibility it was shot down by pro-Taliban militants. The crash came on the same day as Beithullah Mehsud, the South Waziristan Taliban warlord, declared an “indefinite” ceasefire with the security forces. Television channels reported that no formal truce agreement had been reached, and the military said it was continuing operations.
