Chirashanthi, Kamal are champions

MANDYA: Top seed Chirashanthi of Mysore and unseeded S. Kamal claimed the women’s and men’s singles titles respectively in the tennis event of the State Games at the PET College courts here on Wednesday.

Chirashanthi prevailed over her elder sister and second seed Anupama Rajur 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(3), while Bangalore’s Kamal outclassed a weary Santosh Venkatraman, seeded fourth, 7-5, 6-0. Santosh, who played after his singles semifinal and doubles final, had no answer to Kamal’s steady game, especially in the second set. Santosh had ousted top seed A.M Suraj (Tumkur) 6-1, 6-3 in the semifinal.

In the women’s title clash, Chirashanthi was error prone but played the crucial points better than her elder sister after being 1-3 down in the decider.

In a major upset, South Western Railway (Hubli) outspiked State champion KSP in straight games and pushed BSNL out of the semifinal race. The Railwaymen’s 25-22, 25-23, 25-19 win caused a three way tie in the group but its quotient of 1.16 proved marginally ahead of KSP’s 1.14. BSNL despite a win over SW Railway on the opening day had a quotient of 0.97 and bowed out.

Maharani Laxmi Ammani Degree College women qualified for the semifinals with their third win in the league phase of the netball event.

Lakshmi N. of Bangalore, a bronze medallist at the Commonwealth Games in Chennai, claimed the first gold in fencing.
