KOCHI: Vijaya Bank’s maiden triumph at the BPCL Kochi Refinery all-India cricket tournament came with surprising ease here on Wednesday. The Bangalore side crushed India Cements, Chennai, by nine wickets at the BPCL Ground, Ambalamugal. India Cements, which appeared a bit stronger on paper, opted to bat first but faced with some disciplined bowling from mediumpacers S.L. Akshay, B.C. Rajesh and left-arm spinner V. Santhosh, and tight fielding, it never settled down. Only four batsmen could reach double figures with Suresh Kumar (40) and S. Suresh (33) being the best of the lot. Vijaya Bank, which bowed out after the league phase in its last outing here five years ago, chased down the small target easily, with Shyam Ponnappa (53 n.o., 68 balls, 7x4) and captain S. Puranik (55, 65 balls, 1x6, 9x4) standing out. The scores: India Cements, Chennai 152 in 34 overs (Suresh Kumar 40) lost to Vijaya Bank, Bangalore 153 for one in 27.2 overs (Shyam Ponnappa 53 n.o., S. Puranik 55). — Principal Correspondent
