Bakre in sole lead

Chennai: Grandmaster Tejas Bakre of Indian Airlines, Ahmedabad wrested sole lead from Deepan Chakkravarthy by scoring a fourth round victory in the 45th Velammal National ‘A’ chess championship here on Wednesday.

Bakre as white accepted a pawn sacrifice from Deepan early in the English opening, symmetrical variation game and sacrificed his castling right in exchange. He defended the material until the latter overlooked a knight fork and resigned.

Bakre is half a point ahead of others with 3.5 points from four rounds. Six players are in the second spot on three points: S.S. Ganguly, Deepan, M.R. Venkatesh, G.N. Gopal, Abhijit Kunte and M.S. Thejkumar. Nine rounds remain to be played.

Former two-time national champion Abhijit Kunte of Pune benefited from Sethuraman’s voluntary loss of rook for bishop to win in 51 moves with the black pieces.

M.S. Thejkumar of Mysore held defending champion Ganguly of Kolkata to a draw with the white pieces after they reached a level rooks ending after 31 moves.

International Master Rahul Shetty of Indian Airlines, Mumbai held Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi to a 81-move draw when he returned the exchange to draw a pawn down rook and pawn ending.
