All police stations on hills asked to monitor movement of strangers 16-member Special Task Force camping near Kumbakarai Falls THENI: The police have kept the villages on the hills in Theni district under surveillance because of movement of suspected persons, with focus on Varushanadu, Periakulam and Bodinayakkanur hills. All police stations on the hills have been alerted to discreetly monitor movement of strangers, if any, within their limits. Plain clothed police personnel have started making discreet enquiries about strangers visiting villages even near the hills and in remote and interior areas along the State border. Help from local people is also utilised for useful information. Sources in the police administration informed that eight persons were secured in Bodi two days ago on suspicion and later left them after an inquiry. A youth was secured at Chinnur village in Periakulam forest area recently. A 16-member Special Task Force camped near Kumbakarai Falls and closely monitored Periakulam forest range and Kodaikanal hills. The police have formed special teams to tackle any tough situation. Special training in hill combingAlready, a team of police personnel has undergone special training in hill combing in Varushanadu hills. Special Task Force trainers have trained members of these forces on tactical fight, advance weapon handling and jungle warfare. Besides routine screening of vehicles at all check posts, special attention was paid at check posts on the hills and near the State border, said a senior police officer. “This is very sensitive matter requiring extreme circumspection.” The Special Task Force had arrested five Tamil extremists after exchange of fire on Varushandu hills recently. Three extremists were arrested and a huge haul of arms and ammunition seized from them during a check at Muruganmalai in Periakulam few months ago.
