Staff Reporter

Four-day Bharat Sangeet Utsav to begin from today

BANGALORE: Bharat Sangeet Utsav, a four-day musical extravaganza, will begin here from February 7. Being held in the city for the first time, it will be spread across four different venues — the Christ College auditorium, Chowdiah Memorial Hall, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and Purnandara Bhavan in Indiranagar.

The event will witness performances by many well-known musicians, including vocalists Begum Parveen Sultana, Ashwini Bhide Deshpande and R.K. Srikantan, besides instrumentalists Vishwa Mohan Bhat, Vikku Vinayakaram and Praveen Godkhindi.

“We want to reach out to as many music enthusiasts as possible,” said vocalist K.N. Shashikiran of Carnatica, the organisation conducting the event.

“You will see the performance 10-year-old flautist Akash and that of octogenarian Srikantan who are from the city,” he said. Many other local artistes, including Manasi Prasad and Smita Bellur, will also perform.

The music festival will start with the programme “Raga Fantasy” featuring veena artiste Suma Sudhindra and flautist Praveen Godkhindi that shows the confluence of Carnatic and Hindustani music. This programme will be followed by vocal concert by Begum Parveen Sultana.

On February 8, at Chowdiah Memorial Hall, there will be a multilingual concert on the theme “Unity and diversity” featuring vocalist S. Sowmya and accompanying artistes Embar Kannan and Neyveli Narayanan.

The next programme will be the performance by Vishwa Mohan Bhatt (Mohan veena) and Vikku Vinayakaram (ghatam).

The final day will have a programme called “Melharmony” which will feature Chitraveena artiste N. Ravikiran, Tiruchi Sankaran (mridangam), Anil Srinivasan (piano), Neyveli Radhakrishna (double violin) and B.S. Purushothaman (khanjira).

“This will be a combination of melody and harmony,” Mr. Shashikiran said.

Passes are available at the Landmark, Koramangala, or can be booked online through www.indiaplaza.com.
