Over to best practices

The Centre for the Study of Law and Governance (CSLG) at Jawaharlal Nehru University in the Capital this past week submitted a report on the first quarter of a two-year project in collaboration with the Union Government titled “Capacity Building for Poverty Reduction”.

The Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances in the Union Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions Ministry had this past year chosen JNU to conduct research on implementation of best practices in governance in the country.

“CSLG was committed for evaluating eight reports in the first quarter starting September 2007, but through the creation of grassroots networks and linking with institutions working on governance, we have been able to complete 24 reports on some of the widely acclaimed best practices on government records,” says the chairperson of the Centre, Amita Singh

For this project, CSLG has been working in partnership with the University Science and Instrumentation Centre for Technical Assistance and the Centre for South Central, South-East Asian and South-West Pacific Studies at the School of International Studies at JNU.

Of the 24 practices evaluated, three are from outside the country -- two from Chinese provinces and from South Africa.

The research project aims at feeding efforts on inclusive governance by bridging the gap between academic research and its implementation, between theorists and practitioners to overcome the lacunae in administrative reforms.

“Young researchers who have been involved in this project have also made a sensitive survey of the relevance and application of e-governance practices. In the next quarter, we want to increase the number of practices evaluated to 50,” says Dr. Singh.

Birla Institute of Management Technology (BIMTECH) in Greater Noida organised a summit on Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) this past weekend.

The summit on “Indian SMEs in Exports”, inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Industry Ashwani Kumar, was organised to bridge the gap between Indian SMEs and the government policies for them to achieve their full potential.

The consulting club of the Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow, kicked off a unique initiative this past week called “Aetius”, which is a student-run body providing consultation to corporate clients.

Positioned along the lines of consulting clubs at international B-schools like Harvard and Wharton, it aims at providing those looking at a career in consulting with a hands-on experience of working on live projects.

Delhi University’s Indraprastha College for Women wrapped up its three-day annual cultural festival, “Shruti: The Ethereal Song”, this past weekend. Teachers, students and the non-teaching staff all came together to participate in the event.

A number of inter-college competitions in quiz, street plays and Western music were held. Students from different colleges also participated in the folk and Western dance contests.

The highlight of the event was a musical performance by “Aryans” band.
