Decision on Mahishi upsets Deve Gowda

Special Correspondent

‘Thakur being misled by vested interests’

Ready to call on Manmohan, says Deve Gowda

Bangalore: The former Prime Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) president H.D. Deve Gowda is writing to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh shortly on some of the important decisions of Governor Rameshwar Thakur who, he said, was being “misled by vested interests”.

Mr. Deve Gowda told The Hindu that the sudden transfer of Chief Secretary P.B. Mahishi was one among the many “reprehensible decisions” of the Governor.

“Mr. Mahishi has an unblemished record and is well known for his high level of integrity. Is the tenure of a Chief Secretary coterminous with that of a Government?” he asked.

The former Prime Minister said: “What is the message that the Governor is sending to the people of the State by effecting such transfers? It should be remembered that during the President’s Rule even the routine and annual transfers should not be carried out.

“It is a sorry state of affairs that some vested interests are exerting pressure on the Governor. By such actions, the administration in the State will be demoralised and destroyed.”

The former Prime Minister said the news of the removal of the Chief Secretary had come as a shock not merely to him but to the bureaucracy as a whole.

In no State in the country had a Chief Secretary been changed during President’s Rule.

Mr. Deve Gowda said the Vidhana Soudha and the Raj Bhavan are “controlled by some vested interests, particularly a project company. I have written letters against the operations of this company not merely when S.M. Krishna and N. Dharam Singh were the Chief Ministers, but also when my son, H.D. Kumaraswamy, was the Chief Minister.”

The former Prime Minister said that he would also call on the Prime Minister, if need be, to bring the matter to his attention.
