Hunt on for self-styled godman
Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD: A day after recovering counterfeit currency from the house of self-styled godman Nityananda Swamy alias Tripuranandanatha Swamy, the Cyberabad police launched a hunt for him on Wednesday suspecting his involvement in other crimes.
“We suspect he is involved in criminal activities apart from counterfeit currency racket,” the Cyberabad DCP (Crimes) E. Damoder told reporters here. Suspicions about the Swamy’s alleged criminal activities arose following confession of a gang of thieves that it stole counterfeit currency notes --all of Rs. 1,000 denomination-, and tiger’s claws from the Swamy’s house at Borabanda.
The DCP maintained that police recovered 125 such counterfeit currency notes from the gang initially. Following the gang’s confession, the police searched Swamy’s house and recovered 31 more fake notes and two tiger claws. A fresh case was registered against the god-man under section 489 B&C (using, possessing counterfeit currency notes) of Indian Penal Code and relevant provisions of the Wild Life Protection Act.
A special team was sent to West Godavari district where the Swamy’s family lives. Swamy’s family resides at Lakkavaram village in the district. The local villagers donated 14 acres of land to the Swamy who has a tiled house and some huts there.
