JAIPUR: The power crisis in Rajasthan worsened on Wednesday following disruption of about 50 transmission lines of 400 KV and 220 KV in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab. The interruption made it difficult for Rajasthan to procure electricity from other States under the power purchase agreements. A spokesperson of Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Prasaran Nigam here said that the State could not get electricity for several hours on Tuesday night after the transmission lines stopped working due to a heavy fog. This has led to a reduction by 75 lakh units a day in the availability of power. The State is already facing a shortage of 1 crore units of electricity following the closure of Rajasthan Atomic Power Station units and the gas supply to the Dholpur power plant having been stopped. Despite the scarcity, all attempts were made to ensure uninterrupted power supply to agricultural consumers and maintain a reasonable level of supply to others to meet their requirements. The load shedding for urban and industrial consumers is continuing to facilitate the supply of adequate electricity to farmers during the rabi crop season. The spokesperson pointed out that the State had set a record by supplying 125 crore more units of electricity to farmers during the past four months by purchasing power from other States at a cost of Rs.750 crore. For the remaining period of the rabi season, the State intends to purchase Rs.500 crore worth of power.
