This type of tumours are mostly benign The bills are paid by the government CUTTACK: Thirty-year-old tribal woman Radha Muduli of Malkangiri district of the State is now a relaxed person. Doctors of SCB Medical College and Hospital here after a three-hour long agonizing surgery have removed a 30 kg tumor from Radha’s left ovary on Wednesday. The tumour was troubling the married woman for last two to three years. No damage to ovary “This is one of the rare tumours with such enlargement we have ever removed from a patient successfully”, said the head of the Gynaecology Department of the hospital Prof J.J. Mallick, who led a team of at least seven doctors to perform the surgery. This type of tumour are benign and about one to two percent are malignant, he said adding that the pre-surgery tests on the patient had confirmed that she was not suffering from cancer. The enlarged tumour must be of more than two years old and is filled with “mucous cyst adenoma”. The ovary of the patient has been preserved, as the woman is issueless after ten years of marriage. There was also a 10cmX10cm cyst found in her right ovary, which was also removed, Prof. Mallick said. The patient is recuperating well and is likely to stay in the hospital for about a week for observation, said the doctors. Assistant professor Kumudini Pradhan, assistant surgeon Bina Tripathy, two PG students and two anaesthetists assisted Prof Mallick to remove the tumour of the woman who was referred to the hospital by the Malkangiri district administration. Since the two lungs of the patient had squeezed due to the enlargement of the tumour, the doctors performed the operation under life-saving supports like ventilator. “We had also kept the ICU ready for the patient. But everything went smoothly and the ICU provisions were not used, Prof Mallick said. The government as well as some voluntary organizations has come forward to foot the entire hospital bill of the poor tribal woman. When the plight of the woman of Indira Colony of Pradhaniguda, near the district headquarter of Malkangiri came to light last month, the district collector N D Jawele came forward to help the woman to come under the scalpel and remove the tumour.
