Many cases of discrepancies, he says Seeks Rs. 5-lakh compensation to ryot’s family BHUBANESWAR: The Orissa State Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Wednesday demanded a thorough probe into the alleged irregularities committed by the office-bearers of Sujanpur Cooperative Society while reimbursing agricultural loans to the farmers. A 62-year-old farmer had committed suicide on the verandah of the society building on January 30 night after he failed to get a satisfying reply from the authorities with regard to the loan amount pending against him. At a press conference here, CPI(M) leader Santosh Das demanded that the inquiry should be completed within a fortnight and all those responsible for the irregularities be taken to task. Giving details of the findings of a team of the party leaders that visited the victim’s village in Jajpur district, Mr. Das said after receiving the loan recovery notice the farmer had told his son that he had already repaid the loans that he had availed from the society in the past. The society had issued a loan recovery notice to victim farmer Nabaghana Sahu last month stating that he had availed a loan of Rs. 4,250 in 1984 and the total outstanding was Rs. 8,505, including interest of Rs. 4,255. There were many such cases of discrepancies in the records of the Cooperative Society in question, Mr. Das observed. Mr. Das demanded that Sahu’s family be paid a compensation of Rs. 5 lakhs. He also demanded that Agriculture Minister Surendranath Nayak and Cooperation Minister Surama Padhi should apologise for making misleading statements on the suicide incident.
