Award for gender sensitive communications
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Population First and the Catalyst Trust on Wednesday announced the launch of the UNFPA-Laadli Media Awards for gender sensitive communications in the southern region.
The award has been instituted to acknowledge commendable efforts made by the media to support gender issues, according to A.L. Sharada, programme director, Population First, a non-governmental organisation focussing on population and health issues from a gender perspective.
News coverage on television or in newspapers, articles and television advertisements, which highlight the value of the girl child, challenge gender stereotyping and analyse social, economic and political developments from a gender perspective will be eligible to enter the competition.
One jury award will go to a gender sensitive film from each of the four Southern languages and another for a street theatre performance or a stage play.
The awards are open to entries from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry. The last date for receiving entries is March 5. The regional awards will be given away on March 28. For details, log on to www.populationfirst.org.
Regional competitions will culminate in the national award ceremony to be held in New Delhi later this year.
