CHENNAI: Residents of Avadi can expect improved illumination on their streets soon, as the local body has allocated about Rs. 30 lakh for maintenance and also procured a vehicle to carry out repair work on the streetlights. A municipal official said fresh tenders would be invited for the privatisation of streetlight maintenance in about 20 wards in areas such as Thirumullaivoyal, Gandhi Nagar, J.B. Nagar, Kamaraj Nagar and Paruthipattu. Of the 10,500 40-watt lights, maintenance of about 4,500 would be privatised. Sodium vapour lights and hi-mass lights in the respective wards would also be maintained by private agencies. Streetlights in Avadi Housing Board Colony and Thirumullaivoyal Housing Board Colony would also be maintained by private agencies. The remaining 28 wards are being maintained by the local body. In a bid to quicken the repairing of faults in streetlights, the municipality has procured a hydraulic ladder worth Rs. 15 lakh. Residents may also contact the municipality office for immediate redressal of the problem, the official added. Meanwhile, residents in Pattabiram, another area that falls under the local body limit, complained that several streets in their area have been in darkness for several months owing to poor maintenance of streetlights. They demand that the municipality address the problem or consider such areas for private maintenance.
