The stretch before the Writers’ Building in Kolkata wears a deserted look during the AIFB bandh on Wednesday.

KOLKATA: Normal life was disrupted in West Bengal on Wednesday with stray incidents of violence marking the State-wide bandh called by the All India Forward Bloc.

The AIFB, a constituent of the Left Front government, had called the bandh to protest against the police firing on their party workers staging a demonstration in Dinhata in Cooch Behar district on Tuesday.

The Trinamool Congress supported the bandh, while the Congress and the BJP expressed “moral support” to it.

Meanwhile, the toll from the firing climbed up to six, with the death of one more AIFB supporter on Tuesday night and a member of the National Volunteer Force succumbing to his injuries on Wednesday morning.

AIFB State secretary Ashok Ghosh announced compensation of Rs.3 lakh for the families of the party workers killed. Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.

Train services were affected throughout the State, with bandh supporters squatting on the railway tracks at various places. Shops and a few private buses were damaged in Kolkata when processions taken out by AIFB supporters turned violent.

A press release issued by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) appealed for peace, at a time when “reactionary forces are trying to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere in West Bengal.”
