No decision yet on fuel price hike

Sujay Mehdudia

NEW DELHI: With hardly 23 days left for the presentation of the general budget and the international crude oil prices going below the $90 a barrel, the UPA government is understood to be having a “re-think on raising prices” of petrol, diesel and domestic LPG.

Reliable sources said Petroleum Minister Murli Deora met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on Tuesday but no decision could be taken on the issue.

The matter is unlikely to figure in the Union Cabinet meeting scheduled for Thursday as the matter is not listed in the agenda.

“There is no consensus on raising fuel prices at the highest level or among UPA allies. The Group of Ministers (GoM) headed by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee had failed to arrive at any kind of decision. In view of the sensitivity of the matter, it has been decided to wait for sometime and watch developments in the international market before taking any further decision. The fuel price hike could happen after the budget,” the sources said.

They said the Finance Minister was also reluctant to concede the demand of the Petroleum Ministry for adjustments in the duty and excise structure just ahead of the budget. Although a Rs.2 a litre increase in petrol and Re.1 a litre hike in diesel prices was generally agreed upon, the move has been given up for the time being, they added.
