More LPG to be imported to counter shortage

Special Correspondent

It will take 10 days to restore normality owing to bottling problem: Deora

Murli Deora

NEW DELHI: Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Murli Deora on Wednesday said the Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) had decided to make an additional import of nearly 30 million tonnes of LPG during February and March to overcome LPG shortage in the country.

Speaking on the sidelines of the International Conference on Gas Hydrates at Noida, on the outskirts of Delhi, Mr. Deora said that for 2007, LPG imports of 2.4 million tonnes had been tied up but in view of the shortfall, new imports were ordered.

“We will ensure that there is no shortage of LPG during the next few weeks. The Oil Marketing Companies have been asked to step up production and if need be also go in for more imports. There is shortage of bottling and it will take 10 days for the situation to return to normal,” he said.

Mr. Deora attributed the shortage to the extended winter this year as well as the diversion of domestic LPG into commercial markets.

He said there had been a 20 per cent surge in demand owing to panic buying of domestic LPG. Mr. Deora said State governments had been asked to form flying squads to ensure inspection at regular intervals to prevent misuse of domestic LPG. According to official figures, there is a backlog in supplies in Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa and West Bengal.

The shortage of LPG has become a political issue with the Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday warning the government to resolve the crisis within one month or face an agitation.
