India provides large footprint for SAP

BANGALORE: For SAP, India is the ‘jewel in the crown’: the fastest growing subsidiary of the Germany-based global provider of enterprise software solutions. In its 11th year of operation here, during 2007, the company doubled its customer base to over 3,000, saw a hundred per cent growth in software licence revenues and topped independent polls for customer satisfaction.

“We added more than six customers, each working day last year and closed more deals than all of the competition put together,” said Ranjan Das, President and Chief Executive Officer for SAP’s Indian subcontinent operations. Recent customers who had moved to SAP include BHEL, Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Motors and HCL, Mr. Das added.

SAP’s ‘Business One’ product, created with key inputs from the India-based development teams, to address the needs of the ‘small guys’ — small and medium enterprises — has proved a runaway success and earned SAP 2.3 times growth over the previous year, company officials said.

India has always provided a large footprint for SAP, and made the suite of enterprise resource planning (ERP), customer relations management (CRM), supply chain management(SCM), market leaders with shares of between 33 and 42 per cent of the domestic market, according to independent analysts Frost and Sullivan.

“SAP India is SAP on steroids!” said Mr. Das briefing The Hindu, on the sidelines of the formal announcement here on Wednesday. The MIT computer science and Harvard Business School graduate relocated in India to lead the operation in the SAARC area during 2007.

Oracle, Microsoft, ESS, Baan/SSA, 3iInfotech, Sage and the indigenous Ramco are the other key players in ERP and enterprise software in India.
