Chennai: Three goals by international V. Raja was the highlight of Indian Bank’s 5-2 win over City Police in the senior division hockey league championship at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium on Wednesday. Actually, Indian Bank was shocked by an early goal by Manikantan who scored again after Raja had produced the equaliser. Gradually taking control of the match, Indian Bank exerted pressure and levelled the score at 2-2 shortly after resumption when Philip Martin struck. A penalty corner by Olympian Dinesh Naik put Indian Bank ahead. After that Raja took control of the attack and slotted two more give the team comfortable victory. Earlier, YMCA surrendered a 3-0 lead to share points with Southern Railway B. Dominating the field, YMCA surged into the lead through Shalin Satya. YMCA widened the margin when Ravi Kumar and Stephen netted one each. But in the second half, Southern seized the initiative. Pravin scored a field goal followed by veteran Ganesh Pandian. Southern obtained the equaliser through Balamurugan with over 10 minutes to spare. Memorial eventAs part of the Platinum Jubilee celebration of the popular Bertram tournaments, Loyola College has decided to launch a hockey tournament in the name of its former Principal Fr. G. Francis. “We decided on hockey to give the sport a boost at the inter-collegiate level,” Fr. Lawrence Amalraj, President of the Games Committee, said at a press conference here on Tuesday. The Francis memorial tournament will precede the annual Fr. Murphy inter-collegiate football tournament which is into its ninth year now. In all 14 teams would vie for honours in the hockey tournament to be held from February 7 to 12. Fr. Lawrence said that the ground would soon have an artificial turf. “We hope to have a tie-up with SAI and the artificial turf would be ready within six months,” he said.
