Supreme Council backs Thampu

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A day after the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions declared “patently illegal” and “inoperative” the appointment of Valson Thampu as Officer on Special Duty of St. Stephen’s College, the Supreme Council of the institution has thrown its weight behind him.

“The Supreme Council stands by the appointment it has made to administer the college. The order issued by NCMEI will be studied and appropriate legal measures initiated to protect the minority rights of the college,” said Council Chairman Sunil Kumar Singh in a statement on Wednesday.

“Stay calm”

He appealed to all sections of the college community to “stay calm and united in this hour of crisis when the mettle of the college is being put to test”.

Referring to Tuesday’s protest demonstration organised by the Delhi University Teachers’ Association, Mr. Singh said while the Supreme Council respected the rights of all people to express their concerns in a democratic way, it “condemns the outrage involved in resorting to pressure tactics, including spreading of rumours and falsehoods”.

“The Council deplores violation of the sanctity of St. Stephen’s College campus by outsiders and the attempt to overwhelm the life of the college with violence,” Mr. Singh added.
