KOCHI: Variety, they say, is the spice of life. And those at Mahatma Library and Reading Room, Thripunithura, know it better than anyone. The platinum jubilee celebrations of the library are marked by a variety of programmes — the latest being a competition for amateur theatre productions. A Cuban film festival, meeting of teachers, theatre camp for children, literary meeting, Koodiyattom, poetry recital, meetings to commemorate Vayalar Rama Varma and P.R. Varma, book festival and an all-Kerala painting exhibition were conducted after the jubilee celebrations were formally inaugurated by Assembly Speaker K. Radhakrishnan on February 18, 2007. On February 10The former vice-chairman of the Kerala Sangeeta Nataka Akademi and theatre person T.M. Abraham will inaugurate the festival at the Layam grounds on February 10. Six plays will be staged during the two-day event. Komaala by NAD Arts Club; Kaduva, an adaptation of Chinese folktale by Red Star Fine Arts Society, Kaitharam; and Chembakaraman by Aranngu, Thripunithura, will be staged on the first day. Kudukka Adhava Visakkunavante Vedantam by Cochin Talk; Boots by Paravoor Nataka Sangham; and Sabdangal by Celebrates Theatre Group, Kochi, will be staged on the second day. Cash prizeThe plays adjudged first and second will get cash prizes of Rs.5,000 and Rs.3,000 respectively. There will be awards for the best actor, playwright and director as well.
