HAMPI: The 444th “aradhane” of Sri Purandaradasa was celebrated here on Thursday with religious fervour. After performing “abhisheka” to the idol of Sri Purandaradasa at the mantap on the banks of the Tungabhadra, a musical tribute was paid to him by singing his compositions in praise of the lord by a group of artistes led by V.L. Sudarshan from Chennai and another group led by Sarojamma Siddanthi from Bellary. Later, in the precincts of Virupaksha temple, Pushparekha, president of the Bellary Zilla Panchayat, formally inaugurated the two-day celebrations. Saroja, president of the Hospet Gram Panchayat, presided over the function. The State Government had earmarked Rs. 5 lakh in the budget for organising the celebrations. Artistes (vocalists and dance exponents) from various parts of the State will perform during the two-day event. Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Pushparekha stressed the need to follow the teachings of Sri Purandaradasa. Commending the Government for its decision to celebrate the event in a befitting manner, Ms. Pushparekha underlined the need for a dress code, especially for foreign tourists, to protect the sanctity of Hampi. N. Tippanna, MLC, appealed to musicians to popularise the songs composed by Sri Purandaradasa on reforming society in addition to rendering “dasa keerthans”. Govindaraju, vice-president of the Hampi Gram Panchayat, spoke. Jayashree, zilla panchayat member, Pragna Ammembal, Hospet Tahasildar, Joint Director of Kannada and Culture, Chornur Kottrappa, Assistant Director of Kannada and Culture, were present. P.K.H. Tharakan, adviser to the Governor, participated in the celebrations. Subhadramma Mansur, vocalist and stage artiste, performed on the occasion. Amrit Paul, Superintendent of Police, and Rajendran, Assistant Commissioner of Hospet, were present.
