Water woes

Despite spending crores of rupees on several schemes, large parts of the capital city are flooded during the rainy season. Newcomers to the city during monsoon are greeted by the sight of people and vehicles struggling to negotiate floodwaters.

Some time ago, a member of an international delegation on wetland conservation who arrived at the Central Railway Station during an exceptionally heavy spell of rain loudly wondered whether the train had stopped in the midst of a sprawling wetland. The incident was recalled by E.J. James, member of the National Wetland Committee, during a function organised here last week in connection with the World Wetland Day 2008. The delegate seemed to be struck by the presence of a wetland right in the middle of a city, he said, drawing chuckles from the audience. The solution to the problem of flooding, Mr. James added, was to divert floodwaters to rivers. But city residents are tired of hearing solutions.
