Even as many feel that dance and music are not something to be peddled through reality shows or that the search for real talent should not be left to the whims of television viewers, the influence of these shows on children has been amazing. The parents of several of these ‘star children’ have also taken the issue of success in these shows to heart. The scene is one of the ‘thattukadas’ in the city. About 9.30p.m., into the midst of the motley crowd in front of the shop, a young girl walks in smartly and starts distributing some fliers and cards. “Uncle, I am one of the finalists in this show. Please vote for me,” she dimpled. To those who enquired whether she had come alone, she pointed to the car at a distance and said that she had come with her parents. Reality shows might be fun but one was left wondering if the children were being encouraged to think that these shows would give them something more than just the pleasure of being in the limelight for a while.
