PUDUCHERRY: The Police Department has urged the fishermen in the coastal villages of Karaikal region to be on their guard following reports of refugee influx into Tamil Nadu from Sri Lanka. On Wednesday, the police convened a meeting of “fishermen watch group” from the costal villages at the office of the Senior Superintendent of Police at Karaikal. Director-General of Police A.S. Khan said the meeting was convened to apprise the fishermen of the escalation of tension in Sri Lanka and the possible exodus of refugees to Tamil Nadu. Mr. Khan said the fishermen had been asked to inform the police about any movement of strangers in their villages. “As of now, we don’t have any reports of LTTE activity in our territory. But we have given instruction to the police to step up vigil,” he said. Senior police officers in Karaikal said they were closely monitoring the activities of around 30 Sri Lankan refugees settled in the region.
