HEARING THEIR GRIEVANCES: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy with representatives of Pilliarkuppam village panchayat in Puducherry on Thursday. PUDUCHERRY: Representatives of Pilliarkuppam village panchayat on Thursday met Chief Minister N. Rangasamy and sought his intervention in the issue related to setting up of a camp for India Reserve Battalion at Narambai. The members called on the Chief Minister at his chamber and pleaded to reconsider the government’s decision to set up the camp in their locality. If the government went ahead with its decision, the livelihood of the people residing in the villages of Narambai, Pilliarkuppam, Pilliarkuppampet, Valluvarmedu and Kandanpet would be affected, the representatives told reporters after meeting the Chief Minister. Casuarina cultivationThe main source of income for the local residents was through casuarina cultivation and if the camp was set up, the farm activity would be affected, they said. The vacant area in these villages had been used by the residents to dry fish, they added. The villagers appealed to the Chief Minister to find an alternative site for the camp so that the issue could be resolved. The representatives said they had suggested to the Chief Minister that tourism projects could also be taken up in their villages.
