Action follows detection of bogus enrolment during night inspection of hostels

Warden of BC boys hostel at Atmakuru suspended

Functioning of 75 per cent of hostels found good

ANANTAPUR: Collector N. Sridhar has issued show cause notices to 24 House Welfare Officers (HWOs or wardens) of government hostels for bogus enrolment of students and negligence in discharge of duties.

Alleged irregularities and dereliction of duties by the wardens were detected on the night of February 2 when the Collector made mandal-level officials inspect all welfare hostels in the district and spend the night there to mingle with students and take stock of the situation.

The inspection revealed bogus enrolment of students, negligence of wardens towards education of hostel inmates and dereliction of duties. The Collector issued show cause notices to 18 wardens of BC welfare hostels and three each of SC and ST welfare hostels based on the inspection reports.

With a view to improving the functioning of hostels as part of the larger goal of improving SSC results, the mandal officers inspected 151 welfare hostels in 63 mandals on February 2 night. The Collector himself inspected the hostels at Singamala, Atmakuru and Kalyanadurg till midnight on that day.

The Collector suspended warden of the BC boys hostel at Atmakuru S. Chinnaiah after finding drawl of excess funds with the help of bogus enrolment of students in attendance and mess registers. During the inspection, it was found that functioning of 75 per cent of hostels was good, including attendance.

Registers examined

Difference in the enrolment of students was found on examination of attendance registers of the last three months. The Collector said that only those students who stayed in the hostels during the nights would be recognised as hostel students and their names included in the mess registers. Those who had food in hostels and stayed outside would not be included in mess registers henceforth.

To check bogus enrolment and to help improve the SSC results, the wardens were also required to stay in the hostels till the completion of exam from now on, the Collector said. The wardens were also directed to issue ration as per the attendance of students staying in the night.
