Seminar held on ‘language, media and communication’ ‘Globalisation has increased relevance of language’ TENHIPALAM: Language is a medium that can produce the greatest happiness as well as deepest despair, said K. Narayana Kurup, chairman of the National Wage Boards for Working and Non-Working Journalists and former judge of the Kerala and Madras High Courts. He was inaugurating a national seminar on ‘Language, media and communication’ at Calicut University Seminar Complex here on Thursday. Exemplifying the legal implications of language, Dr. Kurup described politics as an art of dealing with people and diplomacy as an art of dealing with politicians. He said the relevance of communication had increased vastly in the age of globalisation. Language can make or mar a message, he said. According to him, the language used in any communication would have an impact among its receivers. Dr. Kurup cited a variety of examples to drive home the point that language could determine the success and failure of the communication. The Southern Regional Language Centre, Mysore; the Calicut University Linguistics Forum; and the Department of Malayalam, Calicut University, jointly organised the seminar. N. Gopinathan Pillai, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Calicut University, presided over the function. B. Sreedevi, president of the Calicut University Linguistics Forum, welcomed.
