ENCOURAGING SAVINGS HABIT: Bank passbooks being distributed to students in Puducherry on Thursday. PUDUCHERRY: The 97th birth anniversary of doyen of the Puducherry Liberation Movement V. Subbiah was celebrated in a novel way by Vanchinathan Mandram, a local non-governmental organisation, on Thursday by enabling 97 children to start savings accounts in a nationalised bank. Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, Speaker R. Radhakrishnan, Education Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan and Social Welfare Minister M. Kandasamy garlanded the statue of Subbiah on Maraimalai Adigal Salai. Leaders of the Communist Party of India including national council member R.Viswanathan and Puducherry unit secretary N. Kalainathan and secretary of the local unit of the All India Trade Union Congress V.S. Abishekam, along with the party activists came in a procession and offered floral tributes to the statue. Leaders and activists of trade union and farmers’ associations garlanded the portrait of Subbiah at the memorial house on Vellala Street. The Vanchinathan Mandram conducted a function at Ellapillaichavadi where the children were enrolled under the ‘Smart Kid’ savings scheme. The mandram wants to encourage the savings habit among the children, its president P. Balagangadharan said. Manager of the 100 Feet Road branch of the Indian Bank P. Chandrasekaran distributed bank passbooks to the children.
